November 8, 2014 Shairah Thoufeekh

If you want to give the villa paradigm a rest and opt for an ‘old school’ resort holiday this time around, here’s a look at five of the best Seminyak has to offer right now. From romantic colonial grandeur at The Oberoi, to hip kid sex appeal at the W, here’s the resort report.

The Oberoi (Editor’s Pick)

The original Seminyak resort that started it all. Think timeless tropical chic, gorgeous old school thatched roof villas, private pools, 15 acres of manicured gardens and an air of romantic colonial grandeur. Kura Kura restaurant is on the tip of most foodies’ tongues when it comes to Bali, with its 20+ course degustation menu and expansive wine list, whilst the Kayu Bar is an intimate ocean side spot perfect for an aperitif or after dinner drinks. Very stylish indeed.

W Retreat & Spa

What The Oberoi can lay claim to in terms of heritage, W more than makes up for in hip kid sex appeal. Seriously funky designer rooms, two stunning restaurants, the best steaks on the island bar none, one of the best brunches in town on Sundays and its very own club and high season music festival. What more could you ask for? World-class mixologists, tip top service and all the trimmings of the W brand are present and correct plus, come high season, the place transforms into a celeb spotters delight. Happening.

Stump for the penthouse here and you’ll literally be living like a Legian King for the night with 270 degree ocean views, private in-house spa treatments, sundowner cocktails and canapés and a bottle of French bubbles upon VIP arrival. There’s also a 24 hour on call butler and a customised dining by design experience courtesy of the resort chef. If that all sounds like too much of a dent in the bank account then opt for any one of the 59 suites and make good use of a stunning infinity pool, funky rooftop bar and one of Bali’s lesser known Thai restaurants onsite. You’re right in the heart of the action here and in good hands.

The Elysian

Basically a boutique villa resort with luxury hotel facilities, this place is always on the top of our lists for the Seminyak high season. Walking distance to KDT and Townhouse, a short stroll to the beach and Dhyana Pura and tucked away just far enough out of the Laksmana scene to guarantee some peace and quiet. Cute spacious villas that pride themselves on state of the art entertainment systems, each with their own private plunge pool and tropical garden, plus some of the most comfortable beds this side of the St Regis keep us coming back to this little slice of paradise.

Without a doubt one of Bali’s plushest beach resorts with some of the best suites on the island and some of the best service you can hope for. The Beach House is a luxurious three bedroom teakwood private villa with its own 16 metre infinity pool surrounded by timber decking overlooking the Indian ocean – perfect for weddings or uber chic get-togethers. Dining is what sets The Legian apart from other big name resorts in the area, a constant attention to gourmand detail is order of the day here plus the restaurant is home to a Wine Spectator award winning selection of old and new world wonders.
