Avani Eco : Replacing Bali’s Plastic [Video]

February 23, 2017 Edward Speirs

Bali’s successful tourism industry has come with a price; waste. With development increasing on the island of the gods, and with larger numbers of people coming to the island each year, Bali’s waste management has become a problem. It’s estimated that 1.5kg of rubbish is disposed of per room night of every hotel on the island. This is significant, considering Indonesia has become the second largest marine plastic polluter in the world.

Whilst recycling, education and legislation are certainly ways to curb the growing issue, one company, Avani, has come up with amazing eco-technology that aims to replace disposable items in Bali, Indonesia and beyond.

From plastic bags and straws to coffee cups and styrofoam take-away boxes, one-use disposable items are huge contributors to waste, especially in a lower-income developing country like Indonesia. One use of these products means up to a minimum of 30 years (plastic straw) in the environment, more for styrofoam.

So, Avani – who started off as Biowear Eco ponchos – gives us the solution to continue our way of life but with a product that does not harm to the environment and contribute to waste management problems. Watch for yourself:
